Final pictures from the first semester

Here are all my 20 final prints that I handed in last week, from the first semester at Falmouth University. It’s four different projects, Person at work, Establishing Image, Portrait and the 24-hour assignment in Plymouth.

It was really nice to finish this and hand everything in. And now we’re starting a new semester with new projects, which I’m sure will be exciting! (:

24 hour project – Plymouth

Yesterday (January 22) we had a 24 hour project, where we were supposed to go to Plymouth, find a story to photograph and send in 6 pictures before midnight. They advised us to do research and decide what story we wanted to photograph before we got there. I ended up doing my story on the lighthouse in Plymouth, Smeaton’s Tower. I thought it was a really nice lighthouse, and for some reason I’ve always been fascinated by lighthouses. I do not know why. Sadly the lighthouse was closed when we got there, so I couldn’t climb to the top, which I really wanted to. Anyways. Here’s a couple of the photos that I took (:

When I went home for Christmas

We got tons of snow the day after I came home. I decided to go outside and make a snowman.IMG_7035

This is from January 1. It was foggy over the water and an amazing light.

For the community shoot for the establishing image brief I chose to go to the Diwali celebration they held in Exeter on the 17th of November. Diwali is a hindu festival, also known as the festival of lights. It is celebrated by Hindus and Indians all over the world. It’s the most important festival of the year and is regarded as the start of a new year. It was really fun, they were dancing and you could buy indian food, there was a snake lady there (a lady who had brought a snake with her) and at the end of the day they had a fireworks display. I had a great day, I’m really glad I went and I think it was a good choice for the community brief.

Here’s a few of my photos from the shoot (:

It’s been raining a lot here lately, and there’s been flooding several places in Cornwall. There hasn’t been flooding where I live, which is in Penryn, but I think it’s been worse down in Falmouth.

Anyways, Gaia from my course and I decided to go down to Gilly beach in Falmouth one day last week when the weather was really bad to try to get some cool pictures. But we got there a bit late so it was too dark to get anything good.

Person at work

Here are a few of my pictures from the “Person at work” project.

Blowing House Garage, Penryn

This first one is one of my favourites, but I don’t think I can use it because it’s not showing anyone working. It was kinda funny when I took it, because he was standing with his back towards me, talking to the other guys, and I was supposed to take a photo of them. But exactly as I pressed the button he turned towards me asking if I wanted something to drink. So his expression is really natural as he had no idea that I was taking a photo before he turned. I also like the expressions of the guys in the back, and that all three of them are turned towards me.

This is the one I’m going to choose as my final print.

Falmouth Coastguard

I’m probably gonna choose this as my final print from the coast guard.

Kernow Boat Covers, Penryn

And this one of the boat cover maker.

Person at work

Today I startet my first shoot for the “Person at work” project. I went to a garage in Penryn where I spent about 3-4 hours. I talked to them and got to know them a little bit while I took some photos. But they weren’t too busy today, so I’m going back someday next week probably, a day they’re more busy.

It’s a small garage with just a few people working there, and it seemed like it could be a nice place to take photos, that’s why I wanted it to be one of the locations for the project.

Before I went to the garage, I looked at Sebastiao Salgado’s photos from his book “Workers: An archaeology of the industrial age”, and I really enjoy his work. And Lewis Hine’s work too, for example this one of a mechanic from 1920.

I also searched for mechanic photos online, and then I found these which I loved, taken by a Malaysian photographer, Foong Wai. The lighting and the details are great in these photos.
